Our history

You can trace Vanquis Bank’s roots back 130 years to Bradford when our parent company, Provident Financial first started. Our founder, Joshua Kelley Waddilove, created a system that allowed local working class families to provide for themselves through vouchers that could be exchanged in local shops. The families would then pay back the vouchers in small instalments.

Vanquis was formed in 2002 and since then we’ve grown and grown and helped over 800,000 people in the UK to get control of their finances. We’re customer focussed and our call centre in Kent is dedicated to giving people the support they need.

We have a full banking licence from the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and the office of Fair Trading together with a licence from VISA International to operate and issue credit cards under the VISA brand.

Vanquis Bank credit cards

Credit cards allow people to shop conveniently in the high street, by telephone or over the internet, to manage emergencies and when travelling abroad. However, many people – including those with little or no credit history, those who have had credit problems in the past and those on lower incomes - can find themselves excluded from having a credit card.

Vanquis Bank brings the benefits of credit cards to these people, but in a controlled way, with a relatively low credit card limit and a high level of contact to help them stay in control. In this way, Vanquis Bank is helping to include more people in the financial mainstream.

We are a responsible lender. We are transparent and provide high levels of customer service. We set appropriate credit limits – as low as £250 – and help our customers to keep their accounts in order by providing a high level of ongoing customer contact.

 The main contact centre is located in Chatham, Kent and some of the specialised support functions, e.g. Marketing, Finance and Legal, are based in the City of London.
