Older consumers are less likely to worry about credit than their younger counterparts, according to confused.com.
The survey revealed that there were differences in the attitudes towards finances between the old and the young when it comes to applying for credit, maintaining credit and paying off credit card debt.
Some 77 per cent of 51 to 55 year olds are accepted immediately when applying for credit while almost half of early 20 year olds do not apply for credit for fear of rejection.
Research by confused.com also revealed that older people are so confident about their credit history that 83 per cent of them have not checked their credit scores for a year or more.
Joanne Garcia, head of credit cards at Confused.com, said: "Our research highlights the different spending habits between age groups.
"Approaches and attitudes differ, however the recognition in clearing credit balances must remain consistent."
Figures from the Bank of England reveal that credit card lending increased by £100 million in September.
