Online shoppers have been urged to 'shop smart' this Christmas through a new a campaign by the UK Card Payments Association.
Its Get Smart Online campaign comes as figures revealed that internet shoppers are set to spend 15 per cent more this December than they did at the same time last year.
The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness about the importance of staying safe when using a credit card online.
More than 32 million Brits now shop online and around 53 million consumers have registered their credit and debit cards with online payment systems such as MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa which make cards more secure when shopping on the internet.
Katy Worobec, head of fraud control for The UK Cards Association, said: "More of us than ever before will be doing our Christmas shopping online this year, and there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be doing so in complete confidence."
She added that card fraud over the internet has fallen for the first time.
Getting a cashback credit card or a zero per cent purchase card can help some consumers to get a good deal on their shopping this Christmas, according to lovemoney.com.
However, consumers with a bad credit rating may face difficulty in getting one of these cards.
