Debt solutions 'need to be comprehensively reviewed'

The options that are open to people who are experiencing debt problems should be thoroughly assessed by the country's Insolvency Service, according to one expert.

A detailed review of debt solutions needs to be conducted by the organisation, the chairman of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) Malcolm Hurlston suggests, which might help those who are in credit card debt.

However, he did note the provisions that are already in place for people who are looking to gain advice about their debt worries.

"The free debt advice sector, CCCS working closely with Citizens Advice and National Debtline, is successfully providing debt advice to thousands of people in the UK who are struggling with unmanageable debt," the expert commented.

His remarks come after a report from the UK's Public Accounts Committee revealed concerns about the management of a debt strategy that the government originally introduced six years ago.
