An over-indebtedness strategy launched by ministers six years ago has not been managed very well, a political committee has suggested.
According to a new
Committee of Public Accounts report, the delivery of a strategy which aimed to offer support to those struggling to deal with debt has been poorly managed.
However, the committee noted that a separate face-to-face debt advice project introduced by the government in 2006 does appear to have had a more positive impact.
The Committee of Public Accounts' chairman Edward Leigh has highlighted the large amount of debt that many people are currently facing, which might include
credit card debt.
He commented: "In the UK, one person in ten is struggling to manage his or her debts.
"And the total of all consumer debt is enormous, some £1,500 billion."
Meanwhile, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service has recently noted that Debt Relief Orders might have eased the debt problems of some of the country's younger consumers in recent months.
