Consumers 'looking to reduce outgoings' during recession
A number of people are opting to save rather than spend their way through the UK's recession, it has been highlighted.

Putting cash aside may have proven to be a more attractive option to some consumers in recent months, Darren Cook of Moneyfacts.co.uk has noted.

"Instead of going out and actually spending or buying goods, people are putting it away," commented Mr Cook, who acts as a spokesperson for the organisation.

He added: "The recession normally makes people prudent."

Mr Cook has also suggested that some consumers may be more inclined to save money if they have seen interest rates on their mortgages fall during the economic downturn.

Drops in mortgage rates might also have motivated some homeowners with things like credit card debt to pay back some of their loans, Moneyexpert.com's head of research Pierre Williams recently suggested.

He said that it was encouraging to see people focusing more on their debt repayments thanks to low mortgage rates.
