Overcoming debt may be an area of focus for a number of UK consumers in the coming months, new figures suggest.

Gocompare.com research has found that 32 per cent of those looking to improve their financial position in 2010 are seeking to address debt issues and things like credit card payments.

Meanwhile, lower outgoings are being targeted by 48 per cent of respondents.

"The credit crunch ensured that everyone was thinking about money this time last year. It gave people a jolt and got us thinking about how we could save money," commented Business development director at the price comparison site Lee Griffin.

He went on to say that shopping around for products may also help people financially this year.

Meanwhile, consumers facing credit card debt after the festive season may benefit from the advice of the Office of Fair Trading and Citizens' Advice, who are encouraging people to save earlier towards Christmas 2010.
