Many consumers are making use of an online resource provided by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) in order to address the debt problems that they have, it has been highlighted.
The internet-based Debt Remedy service provided by the organisation is said to have attracted 150,000 users in 2009 alone.
According to Paula Searle from CCCS, people should not push their debt problems to one side, instead tackling them head-on.
"Unfortunately, too many people don't seek help quickly enough as they are held back because they feel ashamed of their situation," commented Ms Searle, the organisation's head of e-services.
With the Debt Remedy service potentially offering support to those in credit card debt, the body has revealed that between 2008 and last year, the number of consumers using it jumped by nearly two-thirds.
During the recent Money Week initiative, CCCS encouraged people to look at how they might be able to improve their money management.
