Paying down outstanding debt has become a greater priority for some people in recent times, it has been suggested.
However, while noting that people's "attitudes to debt have changed", a spokesperson for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) also believes that certain members of the public are still facing major financial difficulties.
"Increasing numbers of people coming to CCCS lack the means to cover basic living costs, let alone repay their debts," he pointed out.
Additionally, problems may lie ahead for a number of the country's householders, the spokesperson went on to say, with public spending reductions and rising interest rates likely to have a negative impact on people's finances.
The expert's comments follow the publication of Bank of England figures highlighting the amount borrowed last month by people looking to get credit.
A £0.4 billion rise in credit card lending was seen in February, the bank revealed.
