Stephen Ratcliffe, energy product manager for the comparison site BeatThatQuote.com, believes that homeowners should keep a close eye on their gas consumption by "submitting meter readings every quarter".

By following this procedure and opting to make monthly energy payments using direct debit methods, Mr Ratcliffe believes that energy firms will be able to "adjust the monthly payment to reflect the customers actual usage, ensuring they are not under or overpaying into their account".

Meanwhile, those looking to manage credit card debt by finding the most effective energy deals could also make use of price comparison websites, which Mr Ratcliffe believes can prove beneficial.

Research results published by uSwitch.com earlier this year have suggested that a high number of people may not be able to correctly work out their energy bills.
