Many Brits may have set themselves a financially-orientated new year's resolution, such as attempting
bad credit repair.
New research from Skipton Building Society indicates better money management ranks highly among the top five promises UK adults are making for 2012.
Around 26 per cent of respondents acknowledged the best chance of success in their wishes is likely to be in setting defined goals.
Over a quarter - 27 per cent - claimed saving money is to be one of their top priorities for the next 12 months.
It was noted this outstrips concerns such as spending more time with family members, having fun or going on holiday, which are a focus for 25 per cent, 23 per cent and 21 per cent of the surveyed individuals respectively.
Clearing unsecured debt was specified as a target by 13 per cent, which could imply they intend to gain control of their finances through much more disciplined
credit card spending.
Setting money aside for the future is the aim for 31 per cent of respondents, with 17 per cent hoping to manage their money better in general and four per cent attempting to pay off or pay down their mortgage and reduce their outgoings in the long term.
"The challenging economic climate continues to bite and to make it harder for people to both make ends meet and save. However, there's no doubt that developing the disciplines of careful budgeting, cutting down on impulse spending ... makes every situation easier to cope with," commented head of corporate communications for Skipton Tracy Fletcher.
"We believe in doing everything possible to encourage people to manage their finances responsibly," she continued.
Similar results were found in the New Year's Resolution Survey from Gocompare.com, which found 49 per cent of Brits hope to sort out their finances or reduce their expenditure over the coming 12 months.
