Delayed loan payments and the risk of credit card debt have not deterred Leeds students from splashing out at the start of term, according to a poll.
A street poll by Adfero found that fashion accessories such as fake tan and eyelashes remain a popular purchase.
Hannah Spears, at Leeds Metropolitan University, said: "I've just been browsing at clothes and I've bought false eyelashes.
"I like lace and I like sequins as well - that's a good [trend]."
In terms of cutting back on spending this year, she is in agreement with fellow Leeds Met student Rebecca George, who claimed that she is trying to cut back a bit.
However, 20-year-old Jo Harrison, also of Leeds Met, added that her spending will depend on how much money her mum decides to part with.
Despite the struggles faced by many retail markets, fashion spending has stayed fairly stable in the UK over the last year and is predicted to remain so over the next four years.
Students have been among the most recent to suffer in the economic downturn, with the Student Loans Company still dealing with many loan applications after the start of term.
