Some 13 per cent of students were victims of theft last year, making their already limited
credit card budgets even tighter, recent research has revealed
This is equivalent to around 209,000 people across the UK suffering at the hands of thieves, Santander has revealed.
The firm's findings reveal that these thefts were collectively worth over £54 million, with the most common thing to be stolen being cash.
One in four victims had their mobile stolen in the past year and the same number lost their bicycles to thieves.
The average value of possessions taken was £211, but nine per cent had more than £500-worth of items taken.
Helen Bierton, head of Santander current accounts, said: "Students are unfortunately often seen as an easy target by would-be thieves and these figures highlight just how many students are victims of crime during term time."
These student victims of crime could well make up some of the 25 per cent of Brits found by moneysupermarket.com to be desperate for money.
