The town of Hillingdon in Middlesex saw £1.2 million of residents' money stolen in
credit card scams in the past 12 months, it has been revealed.
Police figures for the area registered 685 offences affecting 1,623 consumers, who may now have a
bad credit rating after criminals committed identity theft with their
credit cards, the Uxbridge Register reports.
Detective Sergeant Tony Mitchell, from the Hillingdon criminal investigations department, is now warning cardholders to make sure that they are careful when giving details over the phone or internet.
He told the newspaper: "Free money - this is what a modern day fraudster is thinking every time he wakes up in the morning. How easy is it to get hold of someone's card details? How careful are you when it comes to securing your information?"
James Jones, consumer education manager at Experian, recently said that it is not only wealthy consumers that financial fraudsters are aiming to target.
