The economic downturn was caused by the development of a debt culture in the UK, according to one expert.
Shadow financial secretary to the Treasury Mark Hoban has highlighted the problems that appeared due to people's focus on spending rather than saving.
When it comes to things like credit card debt, the MP suggests that consumers should give more thought to their finances.
"Consumer debt in the UK is equivalent to that of France and Germany combined. We have more credit cards than people," he stated.
Meanwhile, Mr Hoban would like to see interest rates in the UK stay at a low level, in order to help those who are having to make repayments on mortgages and loans.
In the future, he would like to see people improve their focus on saving, to put cash towards their retirement.
Earlier in the month, Clare Francis, moneysupermarket.com's site editor, encouraged people to assess the deals they are currently getting on financial products like credit cards.
