Coalition launched to tackle fuel poverty
A new coalition is aiming to tackle the country's fuel poverty problems by putting more pressure on the government.

Organisations affiliated with the new body include Consumer Focus, National Energy Action and the Child Poverty Action Group.

A charter has been drawn up by the coalition to highlight certain steps that could be taken to deal with fuel poverty, with the group pointing out the impact that large energy bills are having on people's finances.

Jonathan Stearn from Consumer Focus believes that real action has to be taken in order to bring about an end to fuel poverty.

Mr Stearn, the consumer organisation's energy expert, commented: "Any political party serious about ending the hardship millions of fuel poor households are facing must commit to make fuel poor homes as energy efficient as those built today."

While some people may have had to get credit in order to meet their fuel costs in recent months, uSwitch.com also recently suggested that energy debt is currently being experienced by 5.5 million consumers.
