Council tax worries on the rise across UK, report warns
The number of people falling behind on their council tax payments is continuing to rise, it has been reported.

Coming as many consumers across the UK struggle with bad credit card debt, the BBC Radio 4 PM programme has noted an increase in the number of people in England and Wales falling further into the red on their council tax payments.

As well as red letters, many more people are now being visited by council bailiffs looking to recover monies owed, with this 'aggressive behaviour' causing many homeowners to become stressed, as well as cash-strapped.

Commenting on the situation, Peter Tutton from the Citizens Advice Bureau told the programme: "During the recession, we're seeing more and more people under financial pressure and finding it harder to meet basic bills like council tax.

"So if there's aggressive enforcement against them, it could make their debt problems worse."

Recently, the price comparison site uSwitch.com reported that as many as one in ten Britons are now spending more than they earn on a regular basis, with some likely to be turning to credit cards in order to meet their basic needs.
