Half of Brits may not be aware that their bad credit rating is the fault of their ex-partner, according to a new survey.
Some 55 per cent of Brits are unaware that their ex-partner can have a negative impact on their credit rating, a poll by CreditExpert.co.uk has revealed.
Making just one joint application for a high interest credit card could mean that two people are financial linked, even if the account is closed down or never even opened in the first place.
These findings are even more worrying given that one in five Britons keep their debt and money problems hidden from their partner.
Director of CreditExpert Darryl Bowman explained: "The only way to stop yourself becoming a victim of the Ex-Factor is to close any joint accounts and inform us that you are no longer connected.
"So, rather than regularly checking your ex's Facebook status to see what they're up to, you might be better off checking your credit report to be 100 per cent sure you're no longer linked."
Recent figures from CreditExpert released earlier this year indicate that British couples are keeping up to £30 billion worth of debt secret.
