Families 'hit by rise in childcare costs'
Greater demand is being placed on the finances of a number of families due to rising childcare costs, new figures suggest.

According to research published by the Daycare Trust, parents sending their children to nursery schools in England are having to deal with a 5.1 per cent increase in costs if their son or daughter is over the age of two.

Meanwhile, £4,576 is said to be the average amount that English people spend on care over the course of a year, which might force some consumers to get credit in order to meet their outgoings.

Alison Garnham, chief executive of the Daycare Trust, has noted the financial impact that the economic downturn has already had on some families.

She said: "Over the last year, families across the UK have been hit hard by the impact of the recession ... all of which is compounded further by childcare costs shooting [up]."

Childcare.co.uk's chief executive officer Richard Conway has also recently noted that demand for childcare means that care providers do not have to offer competitive prices.
