Families that are struggling financially due to the economic downturn need to be offered more government support, according to Rhian Beynon of Family Action.
Ms Beynon, the charity's head of policy and campaigns, believes that higher energy costs could be notably be hitting the pockets of poorer consumers.
She suggests that it should be easier for such people to get credit.
"The recession makes it vital that the government deals with the issue of financial exclusion and low incomes urgently," Ms Beynon added.
"Low income groups need to access mainstream banking and credit facilities."
The government could also consider the introduction of more tax credits to help struggling consumers during difficult economic times, she believes.
Her comments follow Bank of England governor Mervyn King's recent statement that inflation could be one notable issue that the country's householders will have to deal with over the coming months.
Wage increases are also unlikely to apply to many in the near future, he suggested.
